Christmas for Kids in Rome: Shows, Ice-skating, Exhibits & Nature!

Christmas as such can be considered as a holiday totally devoted to kids, but besides the markets, the gifts, the toys, the decorations that please kids, there are other specific events and activities for the younger ones in Rome. Let’s have a look at them, the Christmas holidays are long and you need to keep your kids busy with something!

Since the weather is still very good with relatively high temperatures and little rain, the ice-skating rinks should be a good destination for some fun and sport.

The Auditorium‘s Christmas Village set up a temporary outdoor one for the Christmas holidays and the same holds for the Porta di Roma mall. At both rinks you can rent ice-skates.

A permanent one, with special Christams decorations, village, market etc…is in Tor di Quinto: it’s the Ice Park. Ice-skate renting available.

As we wrote in a previuos Christmas story, this part of the year teems with shows, concerts, performances. And kids too have more interesting stuff than the rest of the year.

On December 17, the Auditorium holds a free choir concert of Christmas melodies specifically designed for kids. At 5:30pm.

Form December 23 to January 8, Rome will feature the 28th edition of Golden Circus, an International Circus Festival, with crews coming from Europe, Russia and Asia.

The dance scene also offers a ‘must’ for the Chritmas holidays. From January 1 to the 15th, the puppet theatre San Carlino will present its own version of the Nutcracker.

If your kids are in learning mood, there are a couple of exhibits that they will definitely enjoy. One is in the Palazzo delle Esposizioni and deals with prehistoric men. “Homo Sapiens, the great history of human diversity” gathers relics and items from 56 museums and features models and videos that shed light on a key stage of the human race development.

The other is in Rome’s New Fair. It showcases 51 life-size dinosaurs that will likely turn your children crazy! 43 of them move and growl. 14 different habitats and 3D videos will make you feel in the middle of a Jurassic Park.

Finally, if the weather continues to be so good Rome’s zoo, the Bioparco, is also a perfect solution. On December 26, 27 and 28 and on January 6 they propose games, workshops on animals and nature, shows and close encounters with royal pythons, toads and bugs.

In Post-9/11 World, Many Experts Advocate Rental Apartments over Hotel Stays

In this post-9/11 world, many travelers are turning to rental apartments in lieu of hotel stays for safety reasons and many safety experts are advocating this method to remain inconspicuous when traveling abroad.

One example is frequent traveler Andrew Schrage, travel editor at Money Crashers.com, a personal finance website.

Schrage said that during a recent stay in Budapest, Hungary, in addition to the affordability aspect, he chose to live in an apartment rather than a hotel primarily for security reasons. “The biggest reason was the anonymity factor. I knew that if any location were to be the target of a terrorist attack, then more than likely it would not be an inconspicuous apartment on the outskirts of town. Besides the threat of terrorism, other forms of crime such as robbery are a concern when travelling abroad. Essentially, I found it easier to look more non-American by staying in an apartment.” Schrage said that hotel scares in other parts of the world convinced him that “if someone wanted to kill a lot of tourists, this would be a great place to start.”

Schrage, like many others, were made nervous by news reports and travel features dating as far back as 2008, which have repeatedly issued warnings about the precarious nature of hotel safety. In an article dated 11/26/2008 by TODAY travel editor Peter Greenberg, written just after the attacks on the Taj Mahal Palace & Towers in Mumbai, India which killed 160, Greenberg wrote, “Most security experts will tell you that a hotel is a prime "soft" terrorist target: multiple entrances and exits, easy vehicle access and dozens -- and sometimes hundreds -- of unattended bags in the lobby...Like the Taj, most hotels are not designed or built as security fortresses, and many older hotels provide easy opportunities for terrorists to move in and out of the hotel virtually unchallenged.” Then, on July 17, 2009, following bomb attacks in Jakarta at the JW Marriott and Ritz Carlton hotels which killed 8 persons and injured more than 50, CNN’s Barry Nield wrote that these were “the latest in a long line of deadly strikes on prominent hotels worldwide that show, despite stringent security measures, they remain a favorite target for terrorists. With internationally known brands popular with foreign business travelers, such hotels make prime objectives for extremists seeking to maximize impact and publicity for their cause.” And earlier this year, the State Department Monday issued an updated warning on the “continuing threat of terrorist actions” for US citizens worldwide, and warned that “militant groups could target areas where U.S. citizens may gather in large numbers, such as sporting events, U.S. managed hotels, or places of worship.”

Edward L. Lee II, a former professor at George Washington University and currently the head of Sleeping Bear Solutions, a security consulting and training development firm, is the author of “Staying Safe Abroad: Traveling, Working & Living in a Post-9/11 World” and of the blog http://stayingsafeabroad.blogspot.com.

He said that depending on who the person is, quite often they prefer to have a more controlled environment regarding where they’re living. “I’ve been going back and forth to Pakistan in the last few months and staying in an apartment has taken me off the radar completely. [It’s safer] when you consider that most of the major hotels are targeted by truck bombers. Hotels would be the first thing to be targeted.” And safety from terrorism is not all that Lee warns about. “Crime has gone up dramatically in Europe. A lot is driven by the world debt crisis and that kind of thing. Being in an apartment in Italy, for example, would give me a lot more security because even in the better hotels, there are people who linger, looking for an opportunity to rob you...or a group of kids being directed by adults to swarm around tourists and travelers--something ends up missing--a wallet or purse snatching or whatever...If you’re off the grid and not vunerable to those kind of people, so much the better. Not being in that hotel environment definitely reduces your risk.”

Brian Johnson, a professor of security-related courses at Grand Valley State University and the author of “Safe Overseas Travel” agrees that historically, U.S. hotels and chains have been the target of attacks in many parts of the world. But he warns that altering your travel to stay in an apartment is only one of many steps you should take. “If you modify your lifestyle--which means changing the way you dress, who you interact with, and maintaining an anonymous lifestyle such as by staying in an apartment and not announcing that you’re an American, you reduce the risk of being the target of a criminal event or a terrorist attack. Living arrangements are just one component of safe travel.”

This ‘blending in with the locals’ philosophy is one of the reasons that Wade Shepard started renting out apartments by the month, rather than hotel rooms by the night, starting six years ago.

Said Shepard: “When you stay in hotels you are in the realm of the tourist, and, as everybody knows, tourists have a lot of money: they are targets for thieves, con men, and people looking to make a commission at your expense. When you stay in an apartment -- and as soon as a foreigner moves into a neighborhood everyone there is alerted to their presence -- you are treated as though you are living in a place, and are not bothered as much. Also, when you rent an apartment you are staying in the "living sphere" of a culture, there are locals living all around you, and, in this setting, people watch out for you more. When you stay in an apartment, you are a neighbor, not a tourist. Staying in apartments often blur the class lines a little more, as it is generally assumed that if you move into an apartment complex that you are generally from the same social class as the people who live there with you, as people tend to balance their cost of accommodation relative to their income. This removes you from the "rich tourist" bubble, and makes you less of target for theft...I feel that I am safer this way,” he said.

More than a million tickets for an international festival celebrating William Shakespeare as "the world's playwright" will go on sale next month.

Organizers of the World Shakespeare Festival said Tuesday it will include 70 productions and exhibitions involving thousands of international artists.

Most of the events will take place in venues across Britain. Highlights include the staging of 37 of the Bard's plays, each in a different language by a different company from around the world, at London's Globe Theater.

The program also includes a major new exhibition on Shakespeare and his era at the British Museum.

The festival will run from April 23 to Sept. 9 next year. It is part of a larger arts and culture festival accompanying the London 2012 Olympics.

The fee will also be charged to anyone who booked or paid for a trip through a travel agency or tour operator.

In this case the tax will be considered as an extra charge and will have to be paid by the guest directly in the hotel.

The fee is 4.00 Euro per person, per night, for a max. of 10 overnights.

The new trains seek to offer a good means of public transportation as an alternative to taking a car, to move along the Romagna coast with ease. Immersed within a green park on a hill that slopes gently down to the sea, Villa Giulia is a special place that Pavarotti longed for and had to “court” for many years before he made it his own in 1975. “I used to look at this house and every time I thought to myself: how lucky is the farmer who lives there!”, the tenor used to say.

Inside the villa, everything has been left the way it was when the maestro used to stay there: the arrangement of the rooms, the furnishings and the paintings, with his portraits dominating the walls. Enthusiasts can use the music room in the building annexed to the main villa which contains the maestro’s piano.

The property is surrounded by a 12 hectare park which becomes the heart and soul of villa life during the summer months and features a swimming pool and a tennis court as well as a magnificent view of the sea.
“I am a peasant poet. And I look at the sea from the countryside" Pavarotti used to say, offering an inspiring image that confirms he was a true artist.

Arenaways is heading to Southern Italy. Starting in December the private railway company will be seeking to organise a long-distance connection between Northern and Southern Italy providing night trains with car transportation. "In this sense we have made an agreement with the Spanish public railway operator Renfe", concluded Arena "for the use of three hotel trains on the sections towards Villa San Giovanni and Bari, from which it will be possible to head toward Sicily or Greece".

By the end of the year, Trenitalia will be launching the 'Trenitalia Card', which will be used to travel as well as to be admitted to important museums on the Italian peninsula. The idea is to create a card to travel by train and to be able to count on price reductions and discounts for visits to state museums. Trenitalia is seeking to be a key player in tourism promotion in the country, not only be enhancing infrastructures but by offering services and discounts to people travelling in the country.

The 89th Opera Festival 2011 is starting in a few months. Six operas are alternating in a total of 49 performances, from June 17th till September 3rd, starring some of the most famous names from the opera world, together with Orchestra, Choir and Corps de Ballet of the Arena di Verona.

The season is beginning on June 17th 2011 with a new stage setting of La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi, designed by the Argentinean Director Hugo de Ana. The orchestra is conducted by Maestro Carlo Rizzi, who is debuting for the first time at the Arena.

The second opera on stage on June 18th 2011 is Aida by Giuseppe Verdi. The stage setting is designed by Gianfranco de Bosio, who was inspired by the fascinating scenography of the historic production in 1913, designed by the architect Ettore Fagiuoli, and which confirms Aida as the most loved and performed opera at the Arena. The orchestra is conducted by Maestro Daniel Oren.

On June 25th 2011 is on stage the first performance of Il Barbiere di Siviglia by Gioachino Rossini, directed by Hugo de Ana who also designed the scenery, costumes and lights for the highly successful 2007 edition. The orchestra is conducted by the very young Maestro Andrea Battistoni from Verona, who is making his debut at the Arena.

The fourth title is Nabucco by Giuseppe Verdi opening on July 9th 2011. This production is one of the most historic and traditional at the Verona Arena, with scenery by Rinaldo Olivieri and directed by Gianfranco de Bosio, Maestro Julian Kovatchev is conducting.

The fifth title is La Bohème by Giacomo Puccini with the highly successful stage setting by the French director Arnaud Bernard. The Arena Orchestra is conducted by Maestro John Neschling.

Rome Tourism Growing Again...

Tourism demand in the city of Rome is experiencing a positive trend. The data of the EBTL certify that total arrivals at hotels in the area grew 9% in February with respect to the same period in 2010 with 7.9% growth in overnights. Both the domestic and foreign markets performed well. Arrivals and overnights for Italians increased 8.4 and 7.9% respectively compared to February of last year. Arrivals and overnights for foreigners registered an increase of 9.5 and 8% respectively. The top market for incoming was the United States, followed by the United Kingdom, Japan, Spain, Russia, Germany and France. According to the estimates of the EBTL, the positive trend should continue in the period of March-April as well. Analysis of bookings shows an average increase of 7% for arrivals and 8.5% for overnights.
